Thermal infrared imaging cameras are widely deployed for night-time surveillance and security applications to provide 24/7 imaging. These cameras are not affected by ambient light and provide some clear advantages over visible day time sensors such as detecting hot targets or imaging through smoke and fog. Unfortunately, for security and surveillance applications, thermal cameras do not offer the insight that a visible day camera can provide. They also cannot provide complete scene understanding in situations such as thermal cross over times or when there is minimal target-to-background thermal differential.
One solution to this problem is to combine thermal imagery with low light level visible CMOS image sensors. Advancements in CMOS day-to-night technology and image processing provide improved day through night scene contrast and object identification in either monochrome or full color.
Low light CMOS sensors can be employed in stand-alone imaging solutions for security and surveillance applications and their high resolution makes them ideal for long-range applications. These sensors can also be used to augment thermal infrared camera systems to give valuable visual understanding across a full range of illumination and imaging conditions.
